Community Recap - MM x SCP Hilo Hotel

Taylor Martin

Summary: For three days in Hilo, we had the honor of setting up a popup booth in the lobby of SCP Hilo for a free family event with music, food, and crafts. It was amazing.

From April 13-15, 2023, SCP Hilo hosted a vibrant community event that brought together local Hawaiʻi musicians and vendors from around the state. The event was a wonderful opportunity for both kamaʻāina (residents) and malahini (visitors) to immerse themselves in the local culture and support the community via the Mele Manaka Free Community Event.

Local craft and food vendors displayed their unique wares and treats, including jewelry, pottery, and other beautiful, handmade items. We had the chance to browse the vendors' booths, chat with the artists, and purchase one-of-a-kind pieces.

This customer was so excited with her new tunic that she wore it for the next day's festivities! Some of our best sellers this year included: St. Yvonne's Monstera Bell Sleeve Mini DressMeli Wraps' Reusable Organic Beeswax Wraps, and all things Jewelry.

The local musicians added to the festive atmosphere with their beautiful, soulful music. They ranged from world famous singers like Kalani Peʻa, to up-and-comers like Genesis Pua-Kaipo.
They played a variety of traditional Hawaiian songs, contemporary hits, as well as original compositions that reflected the spirit and beauty of the islands.

Throughout the three day event, everyone mingled, danced, and enjoyed the beautiful weather - although we could not escape the Hilo rain on the first day. The sense of community and aloha spirit was palpable, as people from all over the world came together to celebrate the 60th Merrie Monarch Hula Festival and take in all that the Big Island has to offer.

Overall, the community event at SCP Hilo was a huge success, showcasing the best of Hilo.
The combination of locally crafted products and music created a unique and memorable experience that truly captured the essence of our island home.

Mahalo nui loa to our hosts: Breeani Sumera-Lee and Kiana Vallente and our event sponsors: SCP Hotel, Hawaiʻi Rise Foundation, Haku Collective, Keaukaha General Store for inviting us and many other local businesses at Mele Manaka 2023 Community Week. We look forward to next year!
